Classical Education Minor

This research-oriented course will allow advanced students to study one aspect of history in depth with a view towards either graduate study or a project for the President's Academic Showcase for 本科 Research. 五月 repeat 4 times for credit 和 12 units may be used to fulfill major/minor requirements.

This course will study the fundamentals of the ancient Greek language including morphology, 语法, 和 vocabulary for reading simple passages of Greek prose.

A continuation of GRE 101. 先决条件: GRE 101 或同等 with a grade of C- or better.

Readings of selected portions of the ancient Greek Biblical 和 classical texts with special emphasis on building translation skills through a review of morphology 和 语法 as well as the acquisition of the new vocabulary. Prerequisites: C- or better in GRE 101, GRE 102. 五月 be repeated for credit.

This course will study the fundamentals of the Latin language including morphology, 语法, 和 vocabulary for reading simple passages of Latin prose 和 poetry.

Rapid readings 和 translation of classical 和 medieval Latin texts. Topics may include prose authors (Cicero, 凯撒, 李维, 塔西佗), 诗人(卡图鲁, 维吉尔, 贺拉斯, 奥维德), medieval literature (Augustine through the Reformation), 和 prose composition. This course will survey the history, theory, 和 practice of catechesis in the Lutheran Church. Students will examine a variety of catechetical models 和 skills needed to develop a holistic approach to the catechesis of youth, 成年人, 和家庭. A fieldwork component is required. The history of ancient Greece 和 Rome from the time of Homer to the fall of the Roman Empire will be examined in this course with particular emphasis on Greek 和 Roman politics, socio-economic life 和 structures, classical culture 和 philosophy, 和 the rise of Christianity. 先决条件: HST 201 or HST 202 or 因此201年 or 因此202年.

The emergence of Europe from the early Middle Ages to the Italian Renaissance will be examined in this course including the feudal society, the Christian church, cities 和 commerce, art 和 learning, 和 the rise of kings 和 nation states. Europe from the 14th to the 17th century, the transitional period between medieval 和 modern history, will be examined in this course including the Italian Renaissance, the Northern Renaissance, the Lutheran Reformation, the Calvinist 和 Anglican Reformations, 和 the Roman Catholic Counter Reformation. 先决条件: HST 201 or HST 202 or 因此201年 or 因此202年. This course will look at the origins of the American political system from the end of the Seven Years' War through the Louisiana Purchase 和 Marbury vs. 麦迪逊, with a focusing on government under the Articles of Confederation, the 宪法al Convention, ratification controversies, the first political party system, 和 Jeffersonian vs. Hamiltonian approaches to government. This course will focus on the 18th century Europe 和 America from the French Revolution to the fall of Napoleon; the expansion of education, 科学, 和 philosophy; the growth of the middle class; 和 the beginnings of industrialism. Offered alternate years.

The role of religion in American public life will be examined in this course with an emphasis on the interpretation 和 impact of the First Amendment 和 the concept of "separation of church 和 state" on religious 和 political life in the United States. Offered alternate years.

This is a survey course of Western art from the Prehistoric Period through the Renaissance, employing illustrated lectures, independent research, 博物馆参观, 和讨论. This class is offered alternate years in the spring semester.

The reception of classical antiquity depends on both the stories the ancients told themselves, as well as their interpretation 和 reinscription in subsequent times 和 places. This course traces the debt moderns owe to the earliest recorded stories that shaped civilizations, both to appreciate the stories in their own historical context as well as consider the responses (both those that identify with antiquity 和 those that assume its alienation) of succeeding eras, culminating in critical consideration of contemporary cultural evocation of the classical tradition. 先决条件: 因此201年 or 因此202年 or HST 201.

Survey the development of art 音乐 in Western history from antiquity through the baroque period, including the social functions of 音乐 和 the relationship between secular 和 ecclesiastical, 和 vocal 和 instrumental 音乐. This course addresses the question, "Why Art?" in the general education curriculum.

Through the study of representative plays, this course will examine the various theatre cultures from the Classical period through the Renaissance, giving consideration to the theatrical conventions, 视觉艺术, 音乐, 和 significant historical events of the periods.
