Master of Arts in Educational Leadership (MAEL): 社会 Emotional Learning, 字符, 和道德

This course will present the value of incorporating the servant 领导 model into one’s repertoire as an 教育al leader today. Students will identify key characteristics and strategies that will enhance their legacy as a leader who galvanizes positive changes in the lives of students, 的同事们, 父母, and the overall school culture.

This course will examine 教育-related legal disputes in K-12 and higher 教育 levels. Examples of topics to be explored include: campus safety and privacy, student freedom of expression, 网络欺凌, 学校里的宗教, 技术问题, race-conscious policies, 学校体育, 教师任期, 正当程序, 特殊教育, and rights of undocumented students.

This course will provide an overview of the 社会, 文化, and political issues and trends that affect the 领导 in today’s American schools. Students will learn to view polemical issues from multiple vantage points to better understand the diverse perspectives that permeate society today and then lead with wisdom, 荣誉, 和性格.

This course will provide students with an introduction to 教育al research by exploring problems or issues in 教育, qualitative research methods, and analyzing research articles. Students will learn the essentials needed to carry out the research process and begin their capstone project to be completed in EDEL 605.

This course will enable students to finalize their capstone project. Students will triangulate data using critical self-reflection, 可靠的文献, and observations as a method to respond to an 教育al problem or issue in 教育. Upon completion of the written project, students will orally present their capstone project in class.

This course will provide a fundamental overview of the profound benefits that are derived by explicitly including a 社会 情感 learning (SEL) program into the school Curriculum to reduce stress and anxiety, 促进健康, enhance relationships, and promote safety and personal health. Specific strategies will be examined to help students acquire the following: 社会 skills, 社会 awareness skills, 社会 decision-making and problem-solving skills, self-awareness skills, and self-management skills. 

This course prepares candidates with the ability to provide an initial assessment of a student's mental health needs and make the appropriate referrals within and external to the school site. Candidates will learn to counsel and address mental health needs of students 在 times of transition, 分离, 或者压力加剧, and how to access community services that assist all student needs. 另外, candidates will be able to develop, 实现, and monitor prevention, 教育, and intervention programs, including but not limited to behavior disorders, 饮食失调, 药物滥用, 性虐待, 和自杀.

This course will help leaders in 教育 develop a proactive approach to preventing and solving problem behavior on a school-wide basis through effective instructional programs and staff development. Specific strategies will be examined on how to teach appropriate behavior, motivate the apathetic, and reinforce those who exhibit positive behavior. 

This course will provide clear rationale for intentionally incorporating a comprehensive character 教育 program in today’s schools and proactive strategies to help students understand the urgency and relevancy of internalizing ethical values such as respect, 诚实, 正义, 公民美德, 同情, and kindness into their core as people of integrity. The benefits to schools that incorporate character 教育 programs will be examined such as: higher academic performance, 提高出勤率, 减少暴力事件, fewer disciplinary issues, and overall improvement in children’s 情感, 道德, and intellectual development.
